The WSBTA has two openings for a tax referee (tax law judge).
Tax referees conduct telephonic hearings and in-person hearings in Olympia. Some property tax hearings are conducted in other counties, requiring periodic overnight travel. Tax referees reach independent decisions, consistent with agency precedents, and draft decisions that vary in length and complexity.
Tax referees must be able to use generally accepted appraisal and accounting principles in property tax valuation cases, and conduct in-depth legal research when required. Tax referees may also act as mediators in settlement discussions.
The position is an EMS II band, with a starting salary between $75,000 and $95,000, depending on qualifications.
